How to Use a Condom: A Step by Step Guide to Safe and Fun Sex

Using a condom properly is key to protecting you and your partner from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies. It’s a simple process but knowing the steps ensures maximum effectiveness and comfort. Here’s a full guide to using condoms safely and confidently:

1. Choose the Right Condom

  • Materials: Condoms come in different materials, latex, polyurethane and polyisoprene. Latex is the most common but if you or your partner is allergic to latex consider polyurethane or polyisoprene. Lambskin condoms are also an option but do not protect against STIs only pregnancy.
  • Sizes and Textures: Condoms come in different sizes and textures. A snug fit prevents slippage, a looser fit can be more comfortable. Some have ribbed or dotted textures for extra feeling.

2. Check the Expiry Date and Package

  • Check the expiry date on the package. An expired condom may lose elasticity and be more prone to breaking.
  • Check the package for any signs of wear or tear. If the package looks damaged discard it and use a new one to be safe.

3. Open the Package Carefully

  • Don’t use sharp objects like teeth, scissors or fingernails to open the condom package as these can damage it. Tear along the edge of the packet to avoid poking holes in the condom.

4. Check the Orientation

  • Unroll the condom slightly to make sure it’s the right way round. The condom should roll off the head of the penis easily. If it doesn’t then you may have it upside down – don’t flip it and reuse as this can transfer bacteria or pre-ejaculate. Discard it and start again with a new one.

5. Pinch the Tip to Remove Air

  • Hold the tip of the condom between your thumb and forefinger to leave space (about half an inch) for semen. This prevents the condom from breaking during ejaculation. Leaving this space also reduces friction and the risk of tears.

6. Roll the Condom Down

  • While holding the tip, roll the condom down the shaft of the penis to the base, covering it all. Make sure there are no wrinkles or air pockets as these can cause the condom to tear. A smooth fit is key to comfort and effectiveness.

7. Add Lubricant

  • Use a water or silicone based lubricant to reduce friction, it will make it smoother and reduce the risk of the condom breaking. Don’t use oil based lubricants like petroleum jelly, lotion or coconut oil as these can break down latex condoms and cause them to break. Note: Some condoms are pre-lubricated but you can add more if needed.

8. During Sex: Check the Condom

  • Check in occasionally to make sure the condom is in place and hasn’t slipped. If it starts to slip off, stop and adjust it before you continue. If the condom breaks at any point, stop immediately, pull out and use a new one.

9. After Ejaculation: Pull Out Slowly

  • After you’ve come, hold the base of the condom as you pull out while the penis is still hard. This will stop the condom from slipping off and spilling anything. Do this slowly and carefully to avoid any accidents.

10. Get Rid of the Condom

  • Remove the condom from the penis, tie a knot at the open end to stop spills, wrap it in tissue and throw it away. Never flush condoms down the toilet as they can cause plumbing problems and are not biodegradable.

Extra Tips for Better Condom Use

  • Practice Makes Perfect: If you’re new to using condoms, practicing putting one on can make the experience easier and less awkward. It helps you get used to the process especially if it’s your first time.
  • Talk to Your Partner: Communicating with your partner can make using condoms feel like second nature. Discussing protection beforehand can help build trust and make it less awkward during the moment.
  • Double Up on Protection: While condoms are very effective when used correctly, you can add extra safety by combining condoms with other forms of birth control like the pill to prevent unintended pregnancies.
  • Store Condoms Properly: Keep condoms in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. Don’t carry them in your wallet for long periods as the heat and friction can weaken the material.
  • Know When to Replace: Never reuse a condom. Use a new one every time you have sex.

Benefits of Condoms

  • STI Prevention: Condoms are very effective in preventing the transmission of STIs including HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhea.
  • Pregnancy Prevention: When used correctly condoms are a reliable method of preventing pregnancy.
  • Accessible and Non-Invasive: Condoms are widely available, affordable and don’t require a prescription making them an option for many.
  • Encourages Open Communication: Using condoms encourages conversations about sexual health and responsibility in relationships.

Using a condom will make you feel more confident and you can just relax and enjoy the moment knowing you and your partner are protected. It’s a simple but powerful way to safe and responsible sex and overall sexual health.
